yes, it is an electric, but not just an electric, an acoustic electric, which means that it is technically an acoustic guitar but it has a pickup to produce the sound through an amp, thus creating the acoustic electric guitar that Alex is playing, as stated before, I play as well

@ChocolateTurtles actually they play Six Feet Under The Stars a half step up. So they use a capo :)

he actually dropped his guitar down half a step and then dropped it down to D. since he put the capo on the 1st fret, you can keep your guitar on drop D and the rest standard.
