Gunny's "Kwick Walk About" Drill

The day before Gunny's first AKC Senior hunt test, we worked on "birdiness", retrieving, focus, control and responsiveness. When those five factors are in balance, passing a hunt test is more likely. By using remote wingers with mallards and a popper gun, "in your face" walkups can be very exciting and demanding. A focused Gunny reviewed the expectations of being responsive and retrieving mallards under control.

The beauty of this drill is how it ingrains in a dog's mind that the automatic response to 1) a bird in the air is to sit, and/or 2) a shot from a gun is to sit and/or 3) a crisp whistle is to sit and/or 4) a verbal "Sit!" is to sit.
