I had the privelige of meeting Sir Ed, although quite by accident, didn't even recognize him at first. But when I did he was very amused at my change in demenor. When I told him he was a childhood hero of mine and was the reason why I started to climb, he became very serious and became very humble. I told him I purchased his book "High Adventure," when I was 8 years old, he asked me if I still had it and i should get it which I did. He inscribed a note in it and signed it A prized possession
Tenzing not receiving the title or equivalent recognition is just one of many examples of white prejudice and racism. If Tenzing was White, I'd bet things would've been different. I respect Sir Edmund Hillary, he didn't have anything to do with it and knows the real truth.
And I don't think we want him to admit that he was cog, a part of a team, because we want to believe in a hero.
"I think I have a sort of deep feelings of urging myself on. I have always had the feeling that if you are in a a difficult or dangerous situation, that doing a little praying, probably you're chickening out on the deal. I think (it's) pretty up you (I mean ME) to make the decisions and carry on. "
Sir Edmund Hillary was a member of a 400 person team. He was chosen to take part in the final climb presumably because he was a fit young climber. The only other person remembered, Tenzing, was on his 7th climb. Out of those 400 people, doctors, planners, people with strong backs, people with organisational skills, all risking their lives, and the millions that funded the expedition, one of them got to be "Sir Edmund Hillary". The once young guy with the legs does not mention that.
Was this really posted by the Beeb? The audio is so awful.
Sir Hillary is said to have a small ego, but I don't really get that impression from this interview. He points out "the Hillary step," says that prayer is a cop out, and (with regard to the amount of petrol required to get to pole) "I had it all worked out." His ego is a lot smaller than it might be, but not particularly small. He has a small ego for an Anglo Saxon:-)
I'm so happy that the man who made the milestone achievement of reaching the top of the world was such a wonderful humble gentleman as Sir Hillary. If this achievement hadn't been done until our time it would probably be someone who later would be snatched up by MTV, going around doing commercials and mingling on celebrity parties with the rest of the self centered community of look-at-me's. Learn from this man, kids! Not from the degenerated guidos on Jersey shore!
