Spencer Admits to Ryan That He's Not Ryan's Father

At the station house, Ryan tells Spencer that Carl told Ryan that Carl and Ryan's mother were lovers and he demands Spencer tell him that Carl is a liar. Spencer tells Ryan he doesn't know all of it; he never did. But Spencer admits that he is not Ryan's father biologically, but he is in every other way. Spencer has never known, though, who is Ryan's biological father. A devastated and shaken Ryan points out that Spencer always said the boys' mother was Spencer's whole world. Spencer said that never changed for him, but it did for Justine. Spencer just never knew who the other man was. Spencer suggests that Carl must have found out somehow and decided to use this to try and pull Ryan and Spencer apart. Ryan asks what Carl could have found out--that Justine was sleeping around on Spencer? Spencer refuses to hear Ryan talk that way about his mother and defile her memory. Ryan retorts that she already did a pretty good job of that herself. Spencer insists that Ryan not speak against her. Ryan wants to know how Spencer can still defend her. Spencer says he loved her desperately and wanted her memory to be pure for Ryan and Grant. Fighting tears, Ryan asks, "So this pure memory that you wanted to keep for us, you invented some martyred saint that you spoon-fed us all these years?" Spencer said he never thought it would end this way, that he never thought anyone would have to know that she betrayed Spencer. Ryan says now they know she did it with Carl Hutchins. Ryan asks why she rebelled against Spencer--was it his high moral standards? Spencer says he's never known why, though he's asked himself why a thousand times over the years...but he never thought that the man who destroyed his life, and tried to destroy his sons' lives, was the same man who destroyed his marriage. Ryan, the very picture of devastation, just looks at Spencer. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

I feel so bad for Spencer, he ended up losing two sons in his lifetime. No father should ever have to endure that.
