One tip to improve your legato playing.

UPDATE: Hey guys, I think some people have missed the point a little. At no point did I say this is the BEST way to do legato. I said it is a subjectively 'better' way over the 'other' method and said it is the way I do it. I love the sound of all hammer on legato and would love to work on doing it one day. This is just ONE tip on improving legato, it isn't ALL of the methods or ALL of the tips to play legato :)

  • Hey man your a great guitar player, In your opinion is 21 to old to learn guitar?

  • @Rorschach54 Thanks man. Not at all, you are NEVER to old to learn. Sure the brain picks things up quicker when you are younger, but people take up instruments at all ages.

  • This is similar to a Marshall Harrison lesson on legato.

  • @TJGuitarVids Yeah man. the idea of using 'piano style' legato is nothing new. I believe Marshall does the all hammer on technique however.

  • @Adji87

    He does both.

I think yours is still "guitarist legato" though, because the picked notes stand out more than the hammered notes or notes pulled off to. Like Paul Gilbert's "legato" sounds (which definitely isn't a bad thing.).

  • @TJGuitarVids Yeah man, no offence taken at all. I like to think of it as a sort of hybrid between the two approaches, perhaps a middle ground? Your technique of two handed tapping would yield great legato results!

  • thanks for sharing this, these tips where very helpful

  • @Adji87 this is what i did do get it.. practice hammering on off from the pinky to the ring finger. cuz thts the only thing stopping u from doing this! any other combination is fine. another thing that helps in legato in general is to put the tip of your thumb at almost the edge of the guitar neck.this is when you are on the high strings, when u go lower just curl your wrist inward. it feels uncomfortable at first but it makes for good legato, speed, stretching.im the only one so far i see doin it
