It's a stir plate, it is an electric motor, spinning a magnet inside of a wooden cigar box. The magnet in turn, spins the length of paper clip I have on top.
That was the test run, not it turns a metal rod inside of a beaker, to mix liquids. Or in my case, to keep yeast in suspension while growing.
Do a search for stir plate, you find lots of them.
