Visit http://www.digit.lk for the free online IT magazine. This is the video editorial for the June issue.

Ayubowan, welcome to the fifth issue of the online IT magazine diGIT. What an impressive turn of events weve had in the month of May. Our country Sri Lanka was finally able to enjoy true freedom after over 25 years of fighting terrorism. With freedom come great opportunities for Sri Lanka to showcase its many talents to the world. Even with the worldwide economic downturn, I believe these are good times for Sri Lanka and opportunities must be grabbed.

As always, we've had a number of new contributors joining with us this month. Do send in your comments to any of our contributors and they will be more than glad to help out.

We've had a number of significant events that happened in May that are worth mentioning in this editorial.

Firstly, there was the Firefox 3 launch party which was held at the Linux Center on the 2nd of May. The event was well organised and a number of our diGIT contributors were also present with Lahiru bringing in the party pack to Sri Lanka. Chanuke, Suchetha, Chanaka are just a few other names to mention who were involved in organizing this event. Do check the article to see some interesting pictures that were taken during the event.

For the 5th time, the annual Imagine Cup Sri Lankan finals event was held on the 18th May at Hotel Galadari. Talking of its history, it was held in Sri Lanka for the first time in 2005 and it was won by the team at Faculty of Information Technology, University of Moratuwa. The Sri Lankan winners in 2006 and 2007 were also from the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT), University of Moratuwa. However the other university teams did not give up hope and put it more effort in the 2008 event. With stiff competition, it was this time won by the University of Moratuwa again, though it was a joint effort by the Department of Computer Science and FIT. However in 2009, history was made by SLIIT as it won the finals beating the University of Moratuwa and University of Colombo in the final round. Do check the article for details on the projects showcased during the final and some pictures taken during the event.

This months issue also includes an article by Chamira on creating a game using directX. Do follow all his uninterrupted series of articles which shows how to create a game in directX from the groundup. With his guidance, you also might be able to make your very own Sri Lankan game. Its not easy creating such games, but with a little dedication and motivation, anything is possible.

We have Subhash taking over the PHP section and he continues the good work done by Nazly. Subhash explains to us how to store and retrieve values of a two dimensional array in PHP.

Lakpriya as always gives us the knowledge to be competent in C#, with this months article focusing on encapsulation, Inheritenace, Polymorphism.

Hayesha continues his very effective article series on following web standards and stresses the importance of strictly adhering to the Web Accessibility Guidelines set by the W3C when developing websites.

This month, I would like to highlight a few of our contributors so that you would be aware of the skillset that is present behind the diGIT team. Do visit the contributor page for details on all our contributors.

As always, let me end the editorial with a quotation, this time by Robert Maynard Hutchins who once said

'My idea of education is to unsettle the minds of the young and inflame their intellects. '- Robert Maynard Hutchins

So let us hope that this magazine will also be able to unsettle the mind in a good way so that you would one day be able to make an impact in the IT field.

Happy reading!
