EDIT: I have released a test release of SRB2Wii. http://mb.srb2.org/showthread.php?t=31137
EDIT2: New video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yVfiVOrtqg

Hi, I'm Callum. I develop the SRB2 Linux packages, and I also develop SRB2Wii. Here is a teaser video for you guys, showing SRB2 (FINALLY!) loading up, with video, on the Nintendo Wii. I'm using Software mode, and that unfortunately has some compatibility issues with PowerPC systems, and that is getting rectified by SRB2 developers Alam and Logan. These issues with the Software renderer cause SRB2 to crash when attempting to load a level, and causes the visual glitches you see in this video. There are obviously still bugs to iron out, but I hope to release a beta soon enough! SRB2 does not run directly on the Wii, it uses a tiny Wii Linux distribution to work.

When I finally release a beta, there will be no partitioning needed to do, and all the development packages SRB2 needs to compile will be installed, so if you want you can compile SRB2 on your own. As you can see, SRB2 does take a while to start up, but I hope to reduce the load times as much as possible before I release it.

Sorry for the sound not being in sync, as you can tell I recorded the sound separately from the video and it didn't line up properly although I did my best, and my digital camera sucks at taking videos so the framerate isn't full, SRB2 actually runs full speed on the Wii from what I could see.

I hope you enjoy this movie =) Feel free to leave comments and questions.

  • How come you decided to make it run on Linux instead of directly from the Wii using SDL?

  • It actually is more complicated using the Wii directly than you think, since Mesa3D hasn't been directly ported to the Wii yet there would be no OpenGL renderer, which would force us to compile SRB2 without hardware rendering, and that of course won't let us use the Wii's hardware to its full potential as a hardware-accelerated X11 video driver would allow us to (and that will come soon enough). Plus, on Linux, management of flash drives is MUCH better, the SRB2Wii launcher would be able to >

  • copy WAD files from any partition Linux supports, including msdos (fat16), vfat (fat32), ext2, ext3, ext4, ntfs, exfat and other filesystems, while Wii homebrew are limited to fat16 since there is only a driver written for that at the moment and there unlikely will be a driver for the others. Once there are drivers for the Wi-Fi as well, doing it under Linux will probably be a better solution than doing it on the Wii directly..

I can't code so that may be the big reason in this mammoth comment.

  • Cool. :O

  • lol, stupid YouTube forcing me to do gigantic comments =P
