British teacher jailed because pupils named teddy Muhammad

British teacher Gillian Gibbons has been found guilty of "insulting religion" and has been sentenced to 15 days in prison in Sudan.

Backgroun information:

Gillian Gibbons was a foreign teacher at Unity High School in Khartoum, Sudan. In September 2007, she let her class of seven year old pupils to choose a name for a teddy bear. Muhammad is a popular name in the mainly Sunni-Muslim Sudan, and the class chose "Muhammad" to be the name for the bear. This "incident" was said to have offended the parents of some of the pupils. Sudan's top clerics labelled her actions part of a "western plot" against Islam. She was arrested and charged with insulting Islam.

This is not a matter of luck Sudanese have fears of UK since early nineties. They know how the punishment will be therefore their apprehensions from UK are far more than of God.
