Katie Couric comments that the first day of school started with a lesson on politics. The fall semester for students started with a speech from President Obama stressing the importance of education.

Kids need this sort of message, made age-appropriate, from parents, teachers, silly old uncles, spinster aunties, clergy, librarians, policemen, public figures of reasonably good repute, etc., etc... in hopes they'll internalize it, and live it out, day by day, to make their lives meaningful, valuable and a positive example for others.

What wouuld have been the proper theme in the speech was for the President to announce ``more funding for our schools instead on debating whether to send more ``kids to die in a ``Corporate war`..We want to send a message to our kids.. yet sometimes we have to be adult enough to make the right choices for our youth.

There was an article in Time magazine entitled "Dropout Nation" (April 9, 2006) go Google it. It states, "...an increasing number of researchers are saying that 1 out of 3 public high school students won't graduate. For Latinos and African Americans, the rate approaches an alarming 50%."

Landslide -noun: an overwhelming victory or majority

I would call winning by 10 million votes an "overwhelming majority", landslide doesn't mean the entire mountain goes with it.
