The nomads, Martin Larson and Teresa Celeste, await word from the Messenger, an anonymous person who has left vague letters scattered across the globe for the past eighteen years. Martin and Teresa were chosen to protect human sacrifices every Halloween night.

The sacrifice, known as the Heart of the Harvest, is a potent energy source, which put in the hands of the Church of Midnight could spell disaster. The nomads possess a powerful ability to shield the Hearts by harnessing invisible matter known as mantles.

Martin and Teresa lost the Heart last October by over exerting this ability. The gateway to the Old Domain almost opened permanently when the church made the sacrifice. This year the nomads cannot fail. They must be ready for Halloween, but they have more problems than only the sacrifice. Martin is watching Teresa slip into the late stages of lung cancer.

Their duty prevents him from taking her to the hospital, but he wonders if a world without her is even worth saving. Nevertheless, they press on towards California.

And, not far away, along a vacant road, a pale faced man makes for the gateway. He is Chaplain Cloth, the physical manifestation of the churches united. He will wait inside the gateway, staring out with his black eye and orange eye, growing stronger for October 31st.
