Somewhere hits theaters on December 22nd, 2010.

Cast: Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Michelle Monaghan, Benicio Del Toro, Chris Pontius, Laura Ramsey, Robert Schwartzman, Caitlin Keats

Writer/director Sofia Coppola reunites with the film company with which she made the Academy Award-winning hit "Lost in Translation." Her new film is an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles; Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a bad-boy actor stumbling through a life of excess at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood. With an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning), Johnny is forced to look at the questions we must all confront.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta Doesn't look like anyone's going to convince anyone of anything. Agree to disagree. We might as well be talking politics or religion.

  • @brentgv I haven't been trained by anything. Hollywood did not invent tying loose ends. It has been a staple of good storytelling ever since the greeks invented it in their literature. Who says that art has to be pointless like life is? And even if some artists choose to explore that, it has to be done right, and Somewhere is not the case. It's incredibly poorly done, there's no story, nothing happens, no crisis, that's not good storytelling, that's a director not knowing what to say.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta The text messages add context. The beauty is that not everything is explained. You've been trained by Hollywood to have everything tied up, no loose ends. Life resembles little of this construction. The movie starts at a certain point and ends at a certain point. The magic of Somewhere is entering Mr. Marco's life at the height of his crisis, and the film ends at the very moment he makes a decision to change. That's good storytelling.

  • @Dank951 But there was no insight into any of the characters in Somewhere, they showed nothing. Also, some of the things she does are downright bad filmmaking, like making an emphasis, three times, on some stupid blackberry messages and at the end have nothing come out of that subplot, it's just bad filmmaking.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta Existential Crisis and Sofia doesn't use Cliche's nor does she follow the whole "tragedy befalls the antagonist" route that Hollywood keeps repeating. She steers clear of the norms of filmmaking and gives us an insight into the CHARACTERS AND STORY, not the special effects or decorations.

  • @Dank951 and what element would that be?

  • @LaSerpentaCanta I highly disagree. You have your own opinion, that's okay...but I think somewhere captured an element that not too many movies cover/have. It's a fine film, but it relates too much to her 2003--Lost In Translation (only a few more elements and much more existentialism is added).

  • Somewhere is definetely one of the worst films I have seen in my life, it is SO POORLY DONE, it's awful.
