i was always taught to mix the sugar into the liquid first, then the eggs, lastly flour/cocoa. the whole idea is to add the flour last and just mix until incorporated to make sure the gluten doesn't get overworked. you may also want to try substituting half brown sugar for the white. gives it a richer, more staurated flavor. and no vanilla?
