Amongst the less well known forts of Maharashtra, is the Shirgoan Fort. It is located in Shirgoan Village, at a distance of 13 km from Palghar. This sea facing fort was strategically constructed by Portuguese rulers to guard over enemies approaching from Arabian Sea. The fort was later captured by Maratha Rulers headed by Shivaji Maharaj and was further taken over by British. Shirgoan Fort is 200 ft tall, 150 ft. wide and is built in red stone. Nearby is the Shirgoan Beach, which is a major fishing centre of Maharashtra. Lined with palm trees, the beach serves as a popular recreational spot for Mumbaikars and other tourists.
