This is a video of my A4s engine with the valve cover off. I am attemting to diagnose a ticking noise that comes after the engines oil temp has reached normal operating range and only at idle.

  • How many miles are on the car?

  • The Car just turned over 76K miles. I replaced the TB at 72K and the noise has been there ever since that day. I double checked the TB install and it looks good. I may have messed up something when I tried to replace the Cam seal.

  • what is the size of the engine?

  • It's the chain tensioner for sure, I just had to replace mine as well as an engine desludging and an oil pump all at 90k miles. And while the engine was worked on I had the timing belt replaced and a injector upgrade, and chip flashed. I've already replaced the airbox and exhaust system for better exceleration and better power through out the rpm range although over all gains where not that high definitely noticed a difference off the line

  • why did you replace the chain at only 72k i thought chains lasted a lot longer than belts

  • did you change the tensioner on the chain, or just the chain? i also think that there is some kind of hyrdaulic tensioner....the more you turn the car over, the more pressure it will build, thus tightening the chain and changing your timing. it some variable valve timing i thought. Ive never done this so im not going to claim i know it all....lol....its just what i was told.

  • I shoud say that my engine is the golf 1.8t 20 valve

  • I have a 1.8t does that have a cam chain too?

It has similar symptoms; as on you video1.

It makes a noise ONLY when its warm and its very irritating. I've changed oil but that doesnt make no difference.

    hope you can help..

  • I did find the problem. It was the timing chain tensioner. I was able to get a cheap audi replacement and now she works great. No ticking and the valve cover gasket that came from audi fixed the oil leak I had with the parts store gasket. All is well

  • I know it has been a while, but I am curious: did you ever find what the problem was?

  • but how would the noise come out from the other end of the engine? i mean the chain side, and the TB is at the other end.

TB replacements are only pain just because you have to be careful for the timing, and the proper TB tention, but the chain looked kinda loose when you started, and then it regained it tention

  • I would take it back apart and check to make sure everything is ok. At 76K, there should be nothing wrong. I am not entirely familiar with the 5V 1.8 but that tensioner does not seem right to me.
