Your doctor has recommended that you have surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. But what does that actually mean?
Rotator cuff is the term given to describe a group of four tendons that work together to support and stabilize the shoulder joint.
Each tendon connects muscle to bone.

When a shoulder muscles contracts, it pulls on a tendon which in turn pulls on the upper arm bone and causes it to move.
When one or more of these tendons become damaged, the arm loses strength and mobility.
So make sure that you ask your doctor to carefully explain the reasons behind this recommendation.

@leftylethborg yeah, i was for sure gonna get checked by the doctor, but i wanted to see if maybe someone else could gimme a diagnosis, that way i wouldn't have to worry about spending too much money, ya know?

I'm on a waiting list (UK Free under the NHS) for a repair to be done, I wouldn't want it done this way though, much better to go the keyhole surgery route. The only thing that worries me is the time in a sling afterwards, I've heard 3-6 weeks...My shoulder is very unstable, cracks, threatens to dislocate all the time, is burning, painful, aching. Caused by years of throwing for the dog! Good luck everyone. I can't take diclofenac or ibrprofen so have to use codiene/paracetamol.. any tips?

@sonnyafrica1
Yo! It'll be a while before it feels good again, it takes fair bit of gentle (but progressive) physio, be careful lifting over-head and behind, that's a guaranteed re-dislocation! Mine has been out 12 or 13 times (lost count!), and I'm finally getting the operation in a few months. Happy days, new shoulder. Hope yours is feeling better soon!

The most painless way to have this operation is on the Merivaara Practico Shoulder Arthroscopy operating table, the surgeon has better access and the operation takes a lot less time. Contact Europa Medical for details of your local hospital using the table +44 (0)845 658 4328

1/3 of the general population has a rotator cuff but has no pain. So, if you develop shoulder pain its short sighted to think its from the a torn rotator cuff. Unless the subscapularis is torn or the supraspinatus plus another rotator, than you need to seek out good manual care but its hard to find you have to search out someone competent. Surgery is the most common treatment only because its the easiest to obtain not because it is the most successful.
