Ingredients:

1 cup butter or 2 sticks butter or shortening (226 grams)
1 cup confectioner's sugar (113 grams)
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (8 ml)
1 egg
2 1/2 cups flour (355 grams)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring

(optional)
Sprinkle cookies with colored sugar granules or crushed peppermint candies

  • my grandma used to make this every christmas but she used almond extract, rolled the two colors together lightly and then twisted it so that it was a uniform candy cane instead of two separate ropes twisted together. Then after baking she immediately dipped them in sugar. BEST COOKIE EVER.
