This skit makes more sense if you know the original words to the song (the lyrics are posted in this description, so click the "more info"!).

I have had this routine in my head for several years. In May, the head of the Raspberry Jam Band, Julia Riley, asked me to perform something with them, either whistling or singing in voices. It took a couple hours before I remembered that I had this skit that I wanted to do.

The Red Rose Rag was not part of their repertoire, but they learned it just for this routine. This was in the finale concert at the 11th annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival, on Sunday 16 August 2009.

When I start talking, the audio switches to a high-quality recording made from the foot of the stage by Rob Thomas. Unfortunately, the placement of that microphone was somewhat behind (and a considerable distance from) the amplifier from my microphone, so my voice is somewhat quiet in this recording.

You can hear my voice a bit better in the otherwise low-quality audio from my camera in the original video posted here:

The Red Rose Rag was a popular song composed by Percy Wenrich, as explained in my intro. It dates from 1911, and you can download the original sheet music here: http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/cgi-bin/sheetmusic.pl?RagRedRose&Rag&...

Original lyrics:

Down in the garden where the red roses grow
Oh my, I long to go
Pluck me like a flower
Cuddle me an hour
Lovie, let me learn that Red Rose Rag.

Red leaves are falling in a rosy romance
Bees hum; come, now's your chance
Don't go hunting possums
Mingle with the blossoms
In that flowery bowery dance.

Oh honey moon, shine on in June
And hear me croon this loving tune
Trees and breezes crying and sighing it
Lovie, let me learn that Red Rose Rag.

Sweet honey bee, be sweet to me
My heart is free, but here's the key
Lock up the garden gate
Honey, you know I'll wait
Under the rambler rose tree.

Pick a pinky petal for your papa's pride
Beg a burning blossom for your budding bride
Woo me with that wonderful wiggle wag.
Tip to toes to tease me and to tickle too
Do that dainty dance like Dandy Doodle Doo
Ring your Rosie round that Red Rose Rag.

  • Wow! that was great!

  • wow i thought u were the real elmer fudd!! great impersonation 5*'s!!

  • If you ever go to a big show where you have to wear suits and have stage passes or some kind of proof that you're in the show, make the pass a part of the suit, that would be funny if someone would be to ask for it. I think it could be used as a bow tie if modified a bit or as that napkin thing or whatever you have in the breast pocket. It'd be funnier as a bow tie but you'd look silly if done badly. Otherwhise you could just stick it on there and look silly on purpose. I'm out of space to type.

  • Yay! Awesome playing (and whistling) from you and your group!

  • You and the Raspberry Jam Band are a very talented group of people.

It was fun watching you impersonate different toon characters...I enjoyed it a lot! :D
