What a darling idea. Ive got a new great grandbaby coming and life is just too busy. This looks fast and its beautiful. Flannel is warm enough to not need batting for the summer too. And you could even stuff it when you have those areas open and run one simple stitich around the square after you have the squares together at that point. Opens up possibilities .

how do I know what size blocks to use for a queen size quilt and how many blocks across and down

A queen size quilt is around 60"x80". You can often find quilt size calculators on the web, or use these measurements to help plan your quilt.
