@Treetop64: Absolutely spot on. She was the pinnacle of battleship technology, but her time was already past when the first torpedos hit the waters of Tarento. And let's face it "there are two kinds of ships, submarines and targets". Or at least, that's what a bubblehead friend of mine says.
World War II was an ugly time in history yet workmanship was top of the line. One can see nice ships today but nothing like the Yamato. Modern time ships that impress me are not the one on the water but under. Both Russia and USA have made sub grace of the Yamato.
naval warfare had already entered aircraft carrier era when yamato and musashi were commissioned. the resources / materials could have built 4 or 5 large carriers. And what those two battleships had done : combined fleet meetings / conferences were held in the conference rooms( huge, no doubt), some war games before the midway operation...most of times these two ships were at least 300 miles behind the front line..in order not to be discovered by the enemy.
