This is how we taught our budgerigar, Duke, to run through a toilet paper tube (or paper towel tube for that matter). This video shows you step by step how to teach your bird to go through a tube. Begin by putting it at the entrance of the tube with no way to back out, thus the bird is forced to learn to go through a tube (if you don't do this, it is unlikely it will ever try to go through). Then proceed to target the bird through and with enough practice it will just go in by itself. You can use the same technique for other small birds and parakeets. The same applies to larger parrots but you will have to find a larger tube:

To learn how to target your bird, watch this video first:

If you have any questions about clicker training, target training, and trick training, or you need some help taming your parakeet or budgie, come to my parrot forum:

Happy training!

  • @kiliparrot If u put it in a tube could it get stuck? And are budgies the same as a parakeet? I think they r.

  • @1emmsy It won't get stuck. The bird isn't as big as it looks, feathers give it a bigger appearance but compress as it moves through the tube. Budgerigars are not the same as parakeets. The term Budgerigar (budgie for short) refers to the Melopsittacus undulatus species of parrot native to Australia. Parakeet is simply a general classification of about 100 small short tailed parrots. Budgerigar is the species of bird, parakeet is it's description, and parrot is its family.

  • Do you have millet in their diet and as a treat or do you only use the millet as a treat?

  • @bexyb91 There's two kinds of millet or it comes in two different forms. Millet spray is good for treats because you can hold onto it and they really seem to love it. Then there's plenty of loose millet mixed into a classic budgie seed mix. They never seem to get tired of it.

  • my budgie does not get into the roll i do it like you do but he just wont get in it..

  • @nilayozsuer See my more recent video/article about teaching my Cape Parrot to go through the tube willingly by using targeting and positive reinforcement.
