Taken from episode 85. Manga Kenshin would NEVER say anything like this to Kaoru! However! Its funny none the less.

Guess you've never read the manga then. They have an only son named Kenji together and -gasp!- yes they are married. Hell. There is even a small animated clip from the series that show little Kenji with his parents. It's in my favorites I believe.
Remember. Japanese culture is far different then American. They really did marry women off far younger to far older men. That really wasn't uncommon for that era for other counties as well.

actually, in historical european culture, girls were married off typically between the ages of 12 and 16. if you were still unmarried by 20, it was unlikely you'd ever be married. the same is true for America up until about the 1940's-ish when laws started to change. in New York, a girl could legally marry as early as 12 by her own accord. so, really, we weren't any different. the only difference is Japan still fancies the youngins

@UncannyDevine Well in the manga Kenshin always saw Kaoru with her 'kendo' outfit and when he saw her with her kimono he said that, and "I didn't recognize you with THOSE FEMENINE CLOTHES " doesn't sound really NICE, he's like almost calling her a macho chick or something. though, yeah, maybe he wouldn't call her fat, but I mean yes Kenshin sometimes says things kinda like that..but I guess he doesn't really mean to hurt anyones feelings, he's just a little clumsy. ^_^

haha funny scene! but you're kinda wrong with the description, in the first volume of the manga when Kenshin first sees Kaoru with her kimono he says something like " sorry miss Kaoru I didn't recognize you with those femenine clothes" and Kaoru gets mad at him...so yeah, Kenshin kinda says things like that sometimes xP

@1REbeccaChambers Saying you don't recognize someone in different attire is one thing, outwardly calling them fat is another. Regardless of what anyone says, I refuse to believe that Kenshin would EVER call her fat in the manga. Maybe tease her and ruse her temper, but not degrade her physically.
