LZ 129 Hindenburg; being built in Friedrichshafen, it's maiden flight over Lake Constance, and a 'parade' with it's sister ship The Graf Zeppelin over Berlin after returning from a successful trip to South America.

Friedrichshafen is a town on the northern side of Lake Constance in southern Germany, near the borders with Switzerland and Austria.
It is best known for having been home to the Zeppelin airship company and the Dornier Flugzeugwerke. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin originally had his airships built in a floating assembly hall on the lake which could be aligned with the wind to support the difficult starting procedure.
Visitors can learn more about the history of Zeppelin airships in the large Zeppelin Museum sited near the lakeshore. (Wikipedia)

  • this is great!

  • Thank you. It is easy to not notice how 'high tech' this airship was, because of what happened to it at the end of its 'life'.

  • germany - north amerika in 2 days?

  • Planes kill 100s peoples since this time...

  • @railadvocate

It was conceived for helium originally.

They had to change to H2 because they had not a source of helium.

It was modified to carry 20 passengers extra because of the adantage the lighter H2 gave in matter of weight.

    Regards

  • Maybe a bit more updated... And of course with the intended helium. Certainly a far superior way to fly than cramped like sardines in airplanes that usually crash if there's a very serious problem.. But, speed is more important than comfort, life and limb..huh.. But that is an interesting question... The oceans are crawling with huge, lumbering ships that have little in the way of scenery...And slow speed works for them...

  • there has to be someone out there with the means and vision to recreate her!

  • I suppose everyone knows how Hindenburg ended up... But still it was huge. Btw where did you get all those old movies from??
