Amazing performance by former Mouseketeer Dick Dodd, who performed in two seminal surf bands before joining the Standells in the mid-sixties. The lyrics are completely free-form, no attempt at rhymes, which makes the song all the more powerful. The Standells were the final act at Cavestomp 1999. All the original members showed, except for the bass player Gary Lane, who was replaced by Peter Stuart of the Headless Horsemen.
Absolutely loved this song then, and these guys can still rock it out! This wouldn't have made the A-side of a 45 because of it's length, and if anyone had tried to reduce it to 3:00 or less, too much of the soul of the song would've been lost. For that reason, I'm glad it was never released as an A-side. Thanks so much for posting this.

"The lyrics are completely free-form, no attempt at rhymes, which makes the song all the more powerful." Excellent observation, temple. This was released Mid 1966 as the B-side to hit "Dirty Water", i always believed this should have been the A-side. But as a result of that it got very little airplay.i think it would have been a smash it if it had got its chance.First heard it when i played DW's flip side on a JukeBox in Vermont. Played it 4 consecutive times:)Max

Dick Dodd is a phenomenal singer and drummer. This live version is so incredibly good. Many younger bands could learn a lesson or two here !
