A Vietnamese violin called a K'ni. It's a single string fiddle which has a sympathetic cotton string attached to the fiddle string with a small oblong disk attached to the other end of the cotton. You put this disk behind your teeth making the mouth the fiddles resonator. The opening and closing of the mouth creates a 'wah' effect.

  • this is cool...never heard or seen this ,, crazy sounding , looking instrument..

is this miked up ot that is the pure acoustic sound your getting there? totally spacey sound..it s great

    thanks

  • @blowinbamboo I recorded the sound with a shitey audio capture and the built-in mic on the laptop in the background there, then dehissed it and added a touch of reverb, that's all. It's a very quiet instrument as the mouth is the only resonator, so it sounds plenty loud when you play it but is barely audible otherwise. You'd want to be micd up.

  • Awesome instrument. Does mouth give sound loud enough to play along other instruments?

  • No, the sound doesn't carry very well as the mouth is the only resonating chamber. A decent mic would be needed for use with other instruments. It's not heard over anything else in an acoustic context. If the plate is not in the correct position in the mouth then it can barely be heard at all. Still great fun to play though.
