This happened over 3 years ago, but I've procrastinated in posting it until now.

I just moved to Eugene to a new house. My German Angora Rabbit, Mr. Peabody, was temporarily staying in a rather large tiled bathroom upstairs, until I had his accommodations situated for him. One day I came home to an empty bathroom with the heat vent cap, which was rather small, overturned. It was made of steel, and for the life of me, I have no idea how he pried it off and over and fit his fat body into the hole. He had plenty of room, toys, food to keep him occupied, but he obviously had other things in mind.

So he travelled the vents for 2 days. I could hear him thumping as he ran. It was fall, and not cold enough out for heat to be on. So that wasn't a worry. It wasn't hot or cold actually, so he was OK, as long as he could get food. I put some food & water to one area I could access downstairs, yes downstairs. He made it down there the 1st day - I have no idea how he did that either.

I ended up having to hire a heating company to come in with their heat duct fiber optic camera to do a "scope" of the vents to find him. This is the video we captured. The poor guy went under the house and we ended up having no luck trapping him. So I was heart broken.

The next day I went to work for a few hours, came home. I had left all the vent shutters off, so he could, if he wanted, come back into the main area of the house. Somehow he climbed up a 3 foot slippery vent and was exploring the living room as if nothing had happened. I was so happy to see him. Never so happy to see all those poops too. Anyway, a happy ending. I have had some interesting incidents with pets as you can see.

  • well, he may be dumb but he certainly is creative about escaping from any enclosure. The hole must have reminded him of a real rabbit den in the ground. He ended up coming out all on his own within 2 days. Acted like nothing happened.

  • bunnies are so dumb i hope you found him ok or at least alive

  • I'm not sure dumb, he figured out how to take off a heavy steel grate off of a heat vent to escape from a bathroom area. He wanted out. And he figured his way out, which I still have no idea how he did because he'd have to go up a slick slippery 4 foot tube w/ nothing to hold onto. But yeay, he was OK.
