When digital footage is shot using a camcorder, the files created are often very large. These uncompressed files represent the raw moving image, as the camera captured it live. Unfortunately, this footage is rarely convenient to upload and store. This is where video compression comes in.

So, what exactly is video compression and how does it work? In this video, LockerGnome's Brandon Wirtz explains how video compression works, and why it's so important to get right.

  • @rajdeep101 I believe it has something todo with the power supply network. in the NA it runs with 60Hz (2*30Hz) and in EU with 50Hz (2*25Hz), and TVs once were analog technology and needed something like a source for synchronization. but you better look that up for yourself, I am not totally sure about that.

  • @dailydols Oh, so why is NA using NTSC and EU using PAL?

  • @rajdeep101 mainly the framerate and the resolution. NTSC is 30fps with smaller resolution compared to 25fps in PAL with a little bigger resolution.

  • 3:20 is what many claim to be "reptilian shapeshifting".

  • So I have a question. Say that I have a video in a RMVB format and I use a program to convert it to AVI. The RMVB original is 35mb large and the new AVI video is 196mb large. The quality of the video has increased but where did all that information come from? Is it just a change in how the video looked at the existing information?

  • Compressed Video = Slow upload speeds

Uncompressed Video = Faster upload speeds and encoding.

Compression is needed for space not speed.

HD video takes longer to Render when compressing it.

But takes less time to render when keeping it uncompressed.
