马英九的英语没有朱镕基的好。

First, Ma is not showing off! Second, please listen VERY carefully, Ma's wording was actually pretty precise. That 50,000 people can speak English like Ma in Taiwan is highly doubted! Third, It is so obvious that Ma pretended he did not understand the German journalist's question to buy himself some time to respond (or not to respond). The German guy thought he was a smart ass and asked a question that was nearly a taboo under those circumstances.

I actually think Ma is a rather modest politician. His English is pretty fluent for a person who haven't been living in a English spoken country for such a long time. At least his English is the best among all the Asian political leaders except, of course, places like Singapore or India.

Furthermore, why we have to force him to speak in Chinese if he is able to communicate in English directly with the press. Saves tons of time from translation.

BTW, the guy is from GERMANY, not BBC.

馬英九就是喜歡show off。在台灣像他這樣可以說這種程度的英文，至少有五萬人以上­。而且，他竟然聽不懂BBC記者的問題，要SHOW OFF也要有準備，這樣有一點丟臉。我同意總統應該說中文，而不­是用英文。
