Gotta love FDNY and New York! People in LA suck...we would never be able to "bucket" anybody without some form of punishment and publicized hazing BS. Good for you New Yorkers! Life is too short to be pussies! I love it!

@earydog and has the proper credentials to skip the recruit school and go directly onto a truck. However on the opposite side some larger departments frown upon you if you have any kind of previous experience. Just depends on the dept. Best way to know all this stuff is go talk to some of the guys on the dept your looking at joining. As for the training, if you look at a volunteer course, it can be a couple nights a week for several months. For a recruit school you're looking at 10-20 weeks.

@earydog Both of these guys are correct, however there are some exceptions. The hiring process usually takes anywhere between 3 months up to a full year or as in the case of FDNY up to 4 years. That all depends on how quickly the dept. processes applicants and fills up recruit classes and where you are placed on the hiring list. Always check to see if there are any ways that you can bypass recruit school. Some smaller departments allow a firefighter who is already certified (continued)
