while i havent tried "the city" version i do have the original with I&C, A&M, both rivers, and wheel of fortune expansions. I also have the stand alone version called hunters and gatherers and i think that is just as enjoyable and better balanced among the different strategies than the original (where roads are really worth nothing in the grand scheme of things)

I really can't see any spin-off being better than the original with the expansions. Then again, I didn't think I would like the original when I first played it, which means I can't judge the spin-offs until I play them.

Interesting. I just got the Carcassonne Big Box, but I was curious about the city. Can't believe you liked the city better! Maybe I'll get that later.
