This is a live recording from the premiere of Bartok's second violin concerto, Sz 112 (3/23/1939). The Soloist is Zoltan Szekely (the work was written for him) and the orchestra is the Concertgebouw under Mengelberg.

  • i'm 100% agree with you.

  • Also this second movment is an answer to Schönbergs serialism, demonstrating that you can use the 12 notes and still compose a beautiful melody! Last thing, I love Bartòks orchestration, the textures are amazing, it is a pleasure to play with these different colours of Xylphone, harp, basson etc in our interpretation. STILL the piano accompagnment sounds fantastic, like with none of the other concertos!Really difficult for the piano player, but it so great to play!

  • This second movement is sooo hungarian, so full of poetry and nostalgy! Actually Bartòk didn't want to compose a three-movment concerto, he wanted a single piece in form of tema with variations. But the comandor insisted on a three-movment form,so he did it, but still kept his tema with variations idea. This second movement is a tema with variations and the third movement is a kind of.variation of the first movment.
