I remember instead of letting it go I would tie it to the longest string I found and it would go super high :DD

Everyone, SHUT THE FUCK UP about the FUCKING ENVIRONMENT.

one word: UP

A big part of the problem with balloons littering the environment, I think, is the common usage of the standard 11- or 12-inch diameter party balloons. Often, the balloons, which only float for a few hours, don't have enough lift to reach a high-enough altitude needed to burst into thousands of tiny fragments, which are much more biodegradable and harmless to wildlife than deflated intact balloons. I would recommend using larger (at least 16-to-17 inch diameter) balloons for releases.

@pigsonthewinguk Im guessing you don't like the movie Up.
Balloon releases are harmful to the environment, to wildlife and to domestic animals, as I outline in an article, "A salutary lesson in the perils of inflation" which you can find by Googling for "birdguides balloon release".
Perhaps the organisers have been told that the balloons are biodegradable - but, as my article shows, even biodegradable balloons can last - and do harm - for a year or more.

Latex balloons take 6 months to 4 YEARS to degrade in the environment - long enough to be consumed by and kill wild animals, birds, seabirds, sea turtles and whales. The fragments look like food scraps and kelp, squid and plankton!
Balloon releases must be BANNED -they are part of the huge marine litter problem. To ignore this problem and continue to release balloons is IRRESPONSIBLE, and environmentally destructive. Why delete my post? Afraid the truth will come out?
