This is VAI, plain and simple...you could also say there's a taste of Hendrix in there at about 2 minutes...and you could say it moves directly into Fripp...but I think quibbling about it and sniping is a bit, er, outmoded...it's an amazing piece of guitar work no matter what it may or may not sound like.

There's a lot of ways to go at chords off one string.

There's the overtones, but you can definitely have two or three distinct notes. Pinch harmonics, sounding both sides of the string, esp hammering the pick near the bridge, in-between or semi harmonics (where you get a bit of the root note ringing in). Then there's cheating pitch shifter pedal. And *then* there's exciting the string with an electromagnetic signal (feedback or mod-job electronics).
