actually, there were guns in the middle ages. around the last part of it. the saracens and the ottomans got them from trade with the chinese way before europe got them. they were called hand cannons. that was what atair meant. probably when he got older

he didn't modify anything, everything was in the codex

no actually he did modify it notice how in the codex it tells you to cut of your finger leo messed with it a bit and improved it like notice how when Giovanni used the hidden blade he always had to make a fist with his hand that was so the blade wouldn't go through his finger

I'm pretty sure that the Codex said the finger did not need to be cut off, as it was a tradition Altair decided to throw away. Leonardo was one of the few who could decode and reproduce the manuals of the blade.
