Buddy Rich solo

Just finished the book "Traps the Drum Wonder - The Buddy Rich Story", as written by Mel Torme one of Buddy's closet friends. He did, in fact smoke pot - and a lot of it, or as he called it "boo". Not quite sure why ever one here is getting so excited about here - he was a musician for crying out loud - not a preist or a kindergarten teacher. Regardless of his personal life choices, he was still the greatest man behind the tubs....

It takes raw unadulterated talent to do what Buddy did on live TV. And look at the drums they had set up for him! Looks like a 1970's Pearl kit LOL! I mean the people on the tonight show had no respect for Buddy's genius making him play on a cheap kit like that they should have kept a BR kit in the back for him. Actually, Slingerland or Ludwig (I'm not sure who he was with @ the time) should have paid the man a little more attention! It's no wonder he such a bitch all the time (don't blame him).

I must say, I absolutely love Buddy Riches drumming, But I can honestly say I wouldn't ever want to meet him in person. He seems like a class A prick.

That is a Pearl fiberglass kit. Man, they were thuddy drums.

@bergerfry Stanley Jordan is the exception to "there is no best" among guitar players. If you haven't heard of him, I strongly suggest you check him out.

VINNIE COLAIUTA IS THE HEIR APPARENT TO BUDDY'S GENIUS. BUDDY SET THE STANDARD. HE WAS NOT TRYING TO GET RICH AND GET FAMOUS. HE WAS PASSIONATELY BEING HIMSELF AND FAME AND FORTUNE FOUND HIM.

Buddy seems to be uncomfortable and very random the whole conversation. It being the 70s I'm sure he might have had a little cocaine before he went on that night or somethin. And I wonder if he was saying "you guys can't read" to the band or the audience.Probably the band cuz any other Carson appearance they come in at the end of the solo.

@cadaverr Buddy is the exception to "there is no best". After that it is only who you like that is the best because there really isn't a best. There are so many that are so good. Drums, Guitars, comedians, cooks, spouses, etc.
Papa Joe Jones was probably the closest to matching Buddy on the drums.

@bergerfry Do you say that in what sense? Thats difficult to precise. Joe Jones was charisma personified, you could almost feel his happyness in the air while playing. Truely phenomenal - and he was quite a technician too -, but I don't think hes up there with Buddy regarding Buddy's style of playing. I don't think anyone really IS up there though.

@cadaverr I meant that of all the drummers with technical skills, Papa was the closest to being able to keep up with Buddy. Nobody really comes close to what Buddy was capable of but Papa was in my opinion closer than any one.

@bergerfry @bergerfry Hmmm, for me, Morello was closer to Buddy than Jo Jones. The latter was excellent when it comes to doing press rolls, but when full, loud, fast, clean and effortless rudiments (mainly singles) are concerned, Jo Jones leaves something to be desired if constrated to Buddy's take-no-prisioners-like kind of approach to the drums and drum solos in general. But thats ok as this is only my own opinion based on my own observations anyway. Opinions will always vary.
