Say you were developing a game and needed a model of the twin towers. You could start a mesh from scratch, or use one of many 3D scanning techniques to scan models, etc... or you can open "photo2model" and give it your keywords and have it create the model for you in a day based on pictures it finds on the web.
It's not a perfect fit for everything, but it IS a nice start and an interesting idea.
At first glance this does seem rather bland. I came across the story on Slashdot and then found my way here so it makes more sense to me what the impact of this is. Basically, it's a demo of technology that allows them to create a 3D model of something popular based on freely available photographs taken by everyone.
