Saint Paul's North End will no longer be void of dedicated teen activity spaces thanks to a new teen center.
The design team for the project was made up entirely of teens, with coordination of resources by City staff. The renovations were made possible by a $350,000 neighborhood STAR grant. All decisions related to interior colors, features, floor coverings and furniture were made by the young people. This is one of only two spaces in the City's recreation system designed specifically for teens, the other being the teen-based CANVAS art-center near Hamline University.
The facility features a number of separate activity spaces that will allow groups with different interests to participate simultaneously. The updated kitchen and adjacent lounge area will be suitable for teaching cooking classes or selling concessions. The facility's new hours and structured programs will be planned using neighborhood and teen input, but hours have tentatively been set for Wed - Fri from 2 - 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 - 6 p.m.
