The Custom House was seized by the Dublin Brigade of the IRA on 25th May 1921. They saw the Custom House as a manifestation of British power in Ireland, and set the building ablaze.
Not the smartest of actions of the IRA. De Valera's prompting behind it. What was destroyed was not vital to Crown intelligence. Collins was far more effective a soldier. De Valera's ideas for action were not based upon anything that was going to be realistically effective in continuity. Unlike Collins or Tom Barry, or Brugha (despite being for such big actions).
The IRA men lost and arrested, should have ensured DeValera was finished. Somehow history was twisted for him the leader he never.was.
Another very worthwhile contribution - history happening before our eyes.
Thank you.
