Gordon Gano is a devout Baptist. The song is not a joke. If you do a search and find their official site there are explanations of alot of things they did. This is a very uplifting song.

The bassist is Brian Ritchie. I don't think this is a KOKE persay, it's just a song. I don't believe they were actually contemplating the existance of the lil' ole man in the sky, just something to sing about! It's way to well put together musically to be a joke, no they're serious about playing!
