  • I like the idea of viewing the nation as a family, not because I like being treated as a child, but rather that we can treat other people with the same care as the members of our own family. And we can tolerate people like Bill O'reilly as being the crazy uncle of the family, just Bill being Bill.

I think there would be must less hate and more love if people viewed everyone as being one big family.

  • families allow intrusiveness. You, my fellow citizen, should not be able to intrude on my actions the way a family can, and indeed should. Families are able to be judgemental, able to assert standards that a nation should not be able to assert.

One can have warm feelings for partners as well.

I personally prefer the organism metaphor. Our Nation can be thought of as a body with a head, back bone and muscles, an asshole and the like. The prison system can be the asshole, the backbend and muscles are the income earners between 30K 300K and the head: the income earners between 30 Mil 300 mil.

They benefit far more than anyone from the arts, especially after deciding to spend my hard earned endowing the arts. But that metaphor really does not work well, after all, the head really begins to look more and more like the asshole.

  • @pyrrho314 I guess the analogy breaks down. However I do think the analogy can be a moral crutch for people. People thinking of the nation as a family may be more accepting, caring and be less divisive and hostile towards people who deviate from the social norm. A side-effect may be that people become more intrusive, not the biggest problem in my opinion - you can always assert your right to privacy (indeed the same way a family member can).
