21 young refugee students share stories of war and peace in collaborative art project with influential Australian artists.
Half of Australia's refugees are under the age of 15. Many are placed in schools within 48 hours of their arrival to Australia without sufficient command of the English language. In February 2011 ALNF launched the Subtext: Art for Literacy text-based art exhibition in support if its refugee literacy program RAS.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is a striking 25 m long canvas revealing a collaborative work by political artist Locust Jones and 21 teenage students from East Turkistan, Iraq, Vietnam, Sudan, Argentina and Thailand who participated in ALNF's RAS program at Lurnea High School.
Across five workshops the stories of these students were brought to life on canvas, highlighting a stark contrast between the graphic portrayals of violence and brutality with an underlay of poetry, rap and a celebration of old and new identities.
