  • Great Maestro R.B!

  • Yes thats quite accurate. It's all legato articulation and all the notes are very very clear. All this good singing very satisfying to hear.. And contrary to many people who believe the h's and aspirations are an improvement in the coloratura repetoire.

  • Hmm yes ok... So how is legato articulation different than just singing these melismas as legato, because there certainly is a degree of separation here, although I do certainly agree its not like JDF of Araiza... Do you have a vague idea of how this is approached? I am going to ask my teacher about this as well, because my goal is to sing melismas in the way Rocky does. It is far and away the most accurate and I love it :-)..

  • He is actually singing with legato articulation, it's just that the notes are very, very clear. An aspirated articulation would be "ha ha ha ha," - more like Florez or Araiza - but notice he doesn't insert the h's before each note. The legato, connected articulation Rocky performs is much more difficult to execute, while actually the "ha ha" aspirated approach is easier, although not as vocally healthy because it disrupts the constant air flow. Rocky keeps his voice efficiently connected.

  • Couldn't agree more! :)

  • It is quite an amazing feat, and Blake deserves his title of most technically accurate singer around. Also listen to Cecilia Bartoli for a similar use of aspiration.

  • He is aspirating these melismas, which is considered to be the most accurate interpretation of this music. While many great singers may sing this music with a more legato coloratura, this aspirating is the way the true bel canto singers do it. And it is much more difficult!!! Trust me, I am a very young studying bel canto tenor who learned Ecco ridente a while back with legato melismas, and now my teacher is working on this aspirating with me. It is this singing in which you hear EVERY note!!
