When I was in Afghanistan in 2010, one of the most heart-clenching experiences I had was after a firefight near the city of Kandahar. A young Marine's best buddy had been hit with an RPG, and the wounded soldier died in the young Marine's arms. After the fighting stopped, that young Marine came staggering to me with his buddy's dogtags, and he started to cry his eyes out on my shoulder. That was one of the saddest things I had ever seen in my entire life.
