Several thouthand years ago where invented kites ( layanglayang ) in Asia.
In Muna Island, south-est of the Sulawesi Island, in Indonesia, are still made traditional kites with leafs out of trees, small piece of bamboo, and a natural grass string. I had the opportunity to be invited by the International kite festival of Muna Island in August 2009, to learn how to make such kites.
I encourage you to go to this, not touristic, but incredible place to discover two of the oldest local tradition : Kites made with leafs and Kite fishing.
