Gopher tortoises leave their burrows to drink rain water after a drought of 4 or more weeks.

  • do some of them get run over

  • None have been hit by a car during the rain since there is little traffic. But other times during the day, some have been hit by cars due to drivers that were not watching the road.

  • Someone should get the park administration to post signs by the roadways alerting drivers to watch out for the tortoises! The gopher tortoise is a protected species in Florida. I lived there 5 years and saw many gophers crushed along the highways. Very sad.  They're so harmless, these boulder-like vegetarians.
