This is a 1/2 horse power variable speed motor from a mail inserter.

This shows it's different parts and how it works.

The outer shell of the motor always spins at full speed when the power is turned on.

Next between 0 and 50 volts DC is applied to the magnetic coupler. This magnetically couples the inner shaft to the spinning outer shell. This changes the torque delivered by the inner shaft.

A speed sensor in the front of the motor monitors rotational speed, and is used to vary the voltage fed to the magnetic coupler. This allows for precise rotational speed control.

It also has a magnetic friction brake on the back of the motor. This allows for quick stopping once the magnetic coupler is turned off.
