In this lesson we explore the D-Chord rhythm pattern. Though the technique remains somewhat the same there are many different things that can be done in this chord position that are not possible in other positions. Please feel free to contact me at chrissharp80@hotmail.com for lessons via webcam. Also, please visit the websites at www.chrissharpmusic.net and www.myspace.com/chrissharpmusic . I have several CD's for sale with some top notch musicians (including Earl Scruggs, John Hartford, Josh Graves, Kenny Baker, Stuart Duncan, Mike Compton, etc...)

  • Thanks again for all these videos. Very intersesting and informative! I'd be very grateful if you could do a video someday about Lester's approach to instrumentals, fiddle tunes and fast songs aswell. I've seen many videos of him, and sometimes it's really hard to understand what pattern he's using

  • BanjoBoy,

I appreciate your interest in the videos. They are fun for me to make and I'm glad that people are finding them helpful. I hope to be able to post 1 new video each week and I will be getting to the faster songs and instrumentals. I'm trying to make these videos in a beginner to advanced order so I'm not sure when I'll cover those topics. It will take a few videos to cover those. I will be getting to them for sure though. Feel free to email me if you have specific questions. Chris

  • thank you. I've been trying to learn this. I now have something to go on. What about playing fast?

  • Hi Wrint,

Thanks for your comment. If you're referring to playing fast with the D Chord I usually stick with mostly the D string as my bass note and only hit the A string sometimes at the end of a phrase. If you mean in general then I play the full pattern until it becomes impossible. In that case I play mostly down strokes and fewer upstrokes. I've found that I can easily play twice as fast with this style than I ever could using a flat pick for many reasons but mainly a looser right hand.

  • GREAT SOUND !!!

This is a wonderful Video. You can clearly hear how beautiful this sounds with the well developed and refined Left and Right hand techniques.

    Thank You for Sharing,

    DDR

  • Good place to point out why Flatt's videos are so mysterious and confusing. Same when Chris sped up his pattern with the upstroke, his index finger is so relaxed and just hanging there as part of his hand you can no longer "see" him actually make the upstrokes, although of course he is doing it. He's just not "showing off" his index finger movement. It's sort of hiding there in his fistful of fingers! Learners should want to go ultra slow for a long time before speeding up!

  • Yeah boy, this is it. Listen to Flatt play those D chord accents behind Reuben on the Foggy Mt. Banjo album. "Rhythmic" is an excellent word for this "trick".
