Also, if you are needing to clear history using Safari - a good way to clear it is by:
1. Select Safari -> Reset Safari. Select appropriate boxes.
2. Click on the spotlight menu (the magnifying glass at the top right on the menu bar.)
3. Type in "Safari"
4. Find the "Safari" folder and click on it
5. Once the window opens up, click "history."
6. Drag the files into trash.
7. Click on "Trash" on the dock.
8. Click "Finder" -> Secure Empty Trash.
This important if you want to clear history.
