we were about to leave Xinjiang, but we couldn't. we wanted one more night staying with locals, in yurts, in the backcountry, where it's rugged, wild and offers some good, wholesome fun.
so we veered off the highway and ventured into some backcountry and stayed with this family of families - they're honey and alpine mushroom farmers...along with the usual sheep, horses and free ranging chicken.
the backcountry of Xinjiang is amazing. it's the eastern Little House on the Prairie! or, the Chinese Rocky Mountains! except, these aren't the Chinese we find in Canada - these are Kazakh-Chinese, and for a lot of them their second or third language is Mandarin.
anyway, good times.
