The charitably funded Chrysalis Foundation launch at the House of Lords attended by many high profile people including Lord Ouseley, Steve Cattell and Edward de Bono. Founder, David Apparicio and his team aim to reduce reoffending rates by providing education based on proven corporate development training techniques. Pilot schemes at HMP Reading and HMP Highdown are having fantastic results. The Foundation now needs to raise funds to enable further programmes to be facilitated at other locations.
The official Home Office figures state that the UK spends over £11 billion every year on the criminal justice system, housing 80,000 people at Her Majestys pleasure and a further 200,000 people on probation. What is more shocking is that statistics show that an average 60% of offenders reoffend within 2 years of release. If the prison population is reduced by just 5%, that will save the taxpayer around £120 million per year money that could be spent on other public services.
